From a Eurocentric perspective Cape Town is where it all started, as a provisioning and watering centre for the ships of the Dutch East India Company plying the trade route from India to Europe. From this toe hold on the tip of Southern Africa the Dutch and the English launched expeditions to the interior that ended in the eventual establishment of the Republic of South Africa.
